France has decided to provide round-the-clock security for the Israeli Olympic team during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

What’s going on: The decision to provide security for Israeli Olympic athletes comes after far-left lawmaker Thomas Portes stated at a rally that Israeli athletes were not welcome at the Olympic Games and tensions over the war in Gaza. His full remarks: “We are a few days away from an international event which will be held in Paris, which is the Olympic Games. And I am here to say that no, the Israeli delegation is not welcome in Paris. Israeli athletes are not welcome at the Olympic Games in Paris.”

Who made the decision: Following the lawmaker’s remarks, French Foreign Minister stated at a European Union meeting, “I want to say that, on behalf of France, to the Israeli delegation, we welcome you to France for these Olympic Games.” He added that he would assure his Israeli counterpart, “We are ensuring the security of the Israeli delegation.”

Nothing out of the ordinary: Since the 1972 “Munich Massacre,” where 11 Israeli athletes were killed by terrorists during the Olympics, extra security measures have been standard protocol for Israeli Olympic athletes. While the Israeli government typically provides this security, host countries often add an additional layer of protection for the Israeli delegation.

What will be provided: While information related to what France will provide is limited, reports are circulating that French authorities will enhance 24-hour protection for the Israeli team throughout the Olympics. This includes more surveillance, increased security personnel accompanying Israeli security services, and coordination with international security agencies to mitigate any potential threats.
