A Democratic congressman has introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, the process of impeachment begins in the US House of Representatives, where a simple majority vote is required to approve articles of impeachment against a sitting president. Once passed, the matter moves to the US Senate, where a two-thirds majority—67 out of 100 senators—is needed to convict and remove the president from office. As of now, Republicans hold the majority in both chambers, with the House consisting of 220 Republicans and 213 Democrats (along with 2 vacancies), and the Senate comprising 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and 2 independents who caucus with Democrats—making conviction highly unlikely without significant GOP defections.

What’s going on now: Congressman Shri Thanedar, a Democrat from Michigan, has introduced seven articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, accusing him of abuse of power and repeated violations of the US Constitution. The articles include charges of obstruction of justice, abuse of executive power, confiscation of Congress’s appropriation authority, abuse of trade powers, violations of the First Amendment, bribery and corruption, and tyrannical overreach.
Thanedar points to several incidents he considers impeachable in support of these charges. One central example is Trump’s defiance of a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court ruling related to the mistaken deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant who the administration admits they accidentally sent to El Salvador despite a court order protecting him from removal. The White House maintains that it cannot force El Salvador to release him, which some say is just an excuse and amounts to defying the Supreme Court’s order.
Thanedar also references Trump’s creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cut federal funds without congressional approval, his imposition of steep tariffs affecting global markets, his treatment of journalists, and more.
In response, the White House dismissed the impeachment effort as a politically motivated stunt. White House spokeswoman Liz Huston defended President Trump’s actions as entirely lawful and aligned with the will of the American people. Huston also accused Democrats of prioritizing partisan attacks over national well-being.
