A late-night military strike on an internally displaced people’s camp in northern Myanmar has resulted in the deaths of at least 29 individuals, including children.

The camp, located near Laiza in Kachin state, is near the Kachin Independence Army’s (KIA) headquarters—a group entangled in a prolonged clash with the Myanmar military.

Khon Ja from the Kachin Peace Network reported 29 fatalities and 59 injuries after the incident. Contrarily, the Kachin Human Rights Watch reported the death of 32 people, comprising both adults and children.

Images circulating on social media depict rescue workers retrieving bodies amid the rubble. Aung Myo Min, the human rights minister of the National Unity Government (NUG), labeled the attack a “war crime,” adding that around 56 people were injured.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller communicated Washington’s grave concerns over the attack, condemning the military’s consistent assaults, which have caused significant casualties since the coup and intensified the region’s humanitarian crisis.
