India has been hammered by severe rains, leading to devastating landslides in Kerala that have claimed 151 lives, with many people still missing.
What’s the deal: According to Indian officials, the state of Kerala has been hit by severe landslides triggered by relentless heavy rains. These landslides have caused widespread devastation, claiming at least 151 lives, with 183 people still unaccounted for. Additionally, at least 15,695 people have been displaced and are currently taking refuge in over 225 relief camps established to provide immediate assistance and shelter.

How the government is responding: In response to the disaster, the government has launched extensive rescue and relief operations. Agencies including the Army, Navy, NDRF, and local emergency services are actively conducting rescue missions. Multiple dam shutters have been opened to manage water levels and prevent further flooding. The government has also advised residents in vulnerable areas to relocate to safer locations and is continuously monitoring the situation to mitigate further risks.
How much rain did they get?: According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the region recorded over 11 inches of rain on Monday and Tuesday.
Statements from government officials: In a statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying, “My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones, and my prayers are with those injured.” He also pledged to compensate families affected by the landslides, with each family set to receive 200,000 rupees (approximately $2,388).
