The UK has joined the US government in urging their citizens to immediately leave Lebanon due to escalating tensions following the killing of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders by Israel.

What’s the deal: Following intelligence reports that indicate Iran and its proxies are preparing to launch an “unprecedented” and “painful” response to Israel, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said, “Tensions are high, and the situation could deteriorate rapidly. While we are working round the clock to strengthen our consular presence in Lebanon, my message to British nationals there is clear – leave now. A widening of this conflict is in nobody’s interest – the consequences could be catastrophic. That’s why we continue to call for de-escalation and a diplomatic solution.”

What other UK officials are saying: UK Defense Secretary John Healey told reporters that “our Armed Forces will always step up to support British citizens around the world and reinforce regional stability with their professionalism and bravery.  As I told leaders in the Middle East this week, de-escalation must be the primary focus in the region, and we are urging all to dial down tensions. There must be an end to the fighting, an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, and a diplomatic path to peace and security.”

Difficulties getting out of Lebanon: Flights out of Lebanon are becoming increasingly scarce as airlines suspend services due to the heightened risk of conflict following recent events. In addition, people online have claimed that some airlines are taking advantage of the situation by price gouging.

Concerns from Hezbollah: Following the assassination of their deputy leader by Israel, Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, has warned of significant retaliation, indicating that the group is prepared for an escalated confrontation with Israel. He specifically said, “We have entered a new phase. You do not realize the red lines you have crossed. The response will come, whether spread out or simultaneously.”
