The FBI has confirmed that they are launching an investigation into the rising trend of “swatting” incidents targeting conservative media commentators on X.
Some shit you should know before you read: If you’re unaware, swatting is when someone makes a false emergency report—such as a hostage situation or active shooter—prompting heavily armed law enforcement, often SWAT teams, to respond to an innocent person’s home. The goal is typically to intimidate, harass, or put the victim in danger, as police may enter with force, believing there is a real threat. High-profile individuals who have been swatted include celebrities like Justin Bieber, Tom Cruise, and lawmakers such as Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. One of the most infamous swatting cases involved Tyler Barriss, who, in 2017, made a fake 911 call over an online gaming dispute, leading to the death of an innocent man in Kansas; Barriss was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

What’s going on now: In an announcement, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the agency is investigating a surge in swatting incidents targeting conservative media figures, calling the trend both dangerous and unacceptable. “I want to address the alarming rise in ‘Swatting’ incidents targeting media figures. The FBI is aware of this dangerous trend, and my team and I are already taking action to investigate and hold those responsible accountable,” Patel stated. “This isn’t about politics—weaponizing law enforcement against ANY American is not only morally reprehensible but also endangers lives, including those of our officers. That will not be tolerated. We are fully committed to working with local law enforcement to crack down on these crimes. More updates to come.”
Among the conservatives recently swatted is radio host Joe Pagliarulo, known as “Joe Pags,” who revealed that police surrounded his home late at night after a false report claimed he was holding people hostage and shooting dogs. Pagliarulo speculated that the attack was politically motivated, possibly in response to his past comments about Ukraine. Conservative commentator Nick Sortor, who has faced scrutiny for lack of transparency in fundraising efforts for Maui fire victims, also reported a swatting incident involving his family. Sortor said his father and sister were targeted, with police attempting to break down his father’s door at gunpoint. He described the incident as “attempted murder” and revealed that the perpetrator had sent his sister an email calling him a “Nazi” before making the false 911 call.
Shawn Farash, a conservative talk show host and well-known Donald Trump impersonator, was also a victim of swatting, as was as Gunther Eagleman. Both men expressed relief that the FBI is taking the issue seriously, with Farash offering to provide any information that could help the investigation. Other right-wing figures, including Florida-based influencer “Catturd” and Infowars contributor Chase Geiser, also reported being targeted in recent days.
